Bifunctional catalysis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001214
A catalytic process where a single catalyst species or system incorporates two distinct functional groups, each responsible for promoting a different step in a reaction sequence. One functional group might act as an acid, while the other acts as a base, or one might facilitate substrate binding while the other activates a reactant. This cooperative action can lead to enhanced reaction rates and selectivity compared to using individual catalysts for each step.
