General acid catalysis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004817
A catalysis in which the rate in solution depends on the concentration of every Brønsted acid present, not only the solvated proton, so the catalyzed rate is a sum of terms, each the product of one acid's catalytic constant and its concentration. The proton is transferred from the acid to the substrate in the rate-determining step. For a related series of acids the catalytic constants follow the Brønsted relation, in which log k falls linearly as pKa rises, with a slope alpha between 0 and 1.
