α
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000025
A symbol with several meanings in physical organic chemistry, most often the Brønsted coefficient for general acid catalysis, the slope of a plot of the logarithm of a rate constant against the logarithm of the acid dissociation constants of the proton donors. A value near 1 means the proton is almost fully transferred at the transition state, and a value near 0 means very little has transferred. The matching coefficient for varying the base or nucleophile is written beta.
