Protofugality

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009605

The kinetic tendency of a group attached to a molecule to be transferred as a proton (H+) to a base. This property describes the rate of proton departure, distinguishing it from thermodynamic acidity, which is related to the equilibrium constant of the acid's dissociation. Protofugality is quantified by the rate constant for the proton transfer reaction from the acid under consideration to a specified reference base, such as water or another solvent molecule.
