Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001059

A measure of the susceptibility of a reaction to changes in the basicity of the leaving group or nucleophile. It quantifies the extent of bond formation or cleavage in the transition state. The Brønsted coefficient is typically determined from the slope of a plot of the logarithm of the rate constant versus the pKa of the conjugate acid of the nucleophile or leaving group.
