α, β

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000026

Stereodescriptors used in several ways. In steroids, a substituent below the plane of the ring system drawn in the standard orientation is alpha, shown with a broken bond, and one above the plane is beta, shown with a solid wedge. In carbohydrates they give the configuration of the anomeric carbon, so that in alpha-D-glucopyranose the hydroxyl on C-1 and the oxygen on C-5 point the same way in a Fischer projection.
