Fischer projection

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004442

A two-dimensional representation used to depict the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in chiral molecules, particularly carbohydrates and amino acids. In this convention, horizontal lines represent bonds projecting out of the plane towards the viewer, while vertical lines represent bonds extending away from the viewer. The carbon chain is typically drawn vertically, with the most oxidized carbon at the top.
