Fischer-Rosanoff convention

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004443

A historical convention for assigning absolute configurations to chiral molecules, particularly carbohydrates, based on the stereochemistry of D- and L-glyceraldehyde. The configuration of a chiral center was related to these reference compounds, allowing for the assignment of D or L to other molecules. This convention predates and is now largely superseded by the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog (CIP) sequence rules for R/S assignments.
