Racemate

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013465

A mixture containing two enantiomers in exactly equal amounts, so that the rotations of plane-polarized light caused by the two forms cancel and the sample shows no net optical activity. It is written with the prefix (±)- or rac-, or in older usage (dl)-. Its crystals, melting point and solubility can differ from those of either pure enantiomer, because the racemate may crystallize as a distinct compound.
