D, l, dl

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002849

Obsolete lowercase prefixes for the sign of optical rotation, d for dextrorotatory, l for levorotatory, and dl for a racemate, now written (+), (-), and (±). They are not the same as the small-capital D and L descriptors, which relate configuration to glyceraldehyde and remain in use for sugars and amino acids. Rotation sign and configuration are independent: D-glucose is dextrorotatory, but D-fructose is levorotatory.
