Relative configuration

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010137

The configuration of one stereogenic centre described relative to another stereogenic centre within a single molecule. In contrast to absolute configuration, it does not change on reflection in a mirror, so it distinguishes diastereomers but not enantiomers. It is expressed with starred R and S descriptors or with the prefix rel, to show that the two centres have like or unlike configurations.
