Chirality centre

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002008

An atom in a molecule that is bonded to four different groups, leading to a non-superposable mirror image. This atom is the most common origin of molecular chirality, giving rise to stereoisomers known as enantiomers. Carbon atoms are frequently chirality centers, but other atoms like nitrogen, phosphorus, or sulfur can also serve this role.
