Planar chirality

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008995

A type of stereoisomerism in which handedness comes from an unsymmetrical placement of groups relative to a stereogenic plane, with no stereogenic centre required. Typical examples are (E)-cyclooctene, monosubstituted paracyclophanes and ferrocenes carrying two different substituents on one ring, where the ring prevents the arrangement flipping into its mirror image. Allenes and hindered biaryls are not planar chiral; they show axial chirality instead.
