Racemic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009793
Describing a mixture that contains equal amounts of a pair of enantiomers. A racemic mixture is optically inactive because the opposing optical rotations of the two enantiomers cancel each other out completely. Such a mixture is designated by the prefix (±)- or by the descriptors dl- or rac-, for example, rac-glyceraldehyde.
