Α-expulsion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000313

A photochemical reaction in which the substituent on the carbon next to an excited chromophore, such as a carbonyl, is lost as a radical or as an anion. The bond that breaks is the one between that alpha carbon and its substituent. It differs from alpha cleavage (Norrish type I), in which the bond between the carbonyl carbon and the alpha carbon breaks.
