z-ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012812
A type of fragment ion observed in tandem mass spectrometry, particularly in the collision-induced dissociation of peptides. It results from the cleavage of the peptide backbone at a peptide bond, retaining the C-terminal portion of the peptide and carrying the charge on the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group. The mass of a z-ion is characteristic of the amino acid sequence from the C-terminus.
