Zinc finger

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012811

A structural motif within a protein where a zinc ion is tetrahedrally bound by the side chains of cysteine or histidine residues. This binding stabilizes a small, independently folded domain, creating a finger-like projection from the protein backbone. Zinc finger domains are frequently found in proteins that interact with DNA or RNA, such as transcription factors, where they recognize and bind to specific nucleotide sequences.
