A specific sequence of nucleotides on a DNA or RNA molecule, or a particular three-dimensional structure on a protein, that is specifically bound by another molecule. This binding initiates a biological process, such as enzyme catalysis, gene regulation, or immune response. Restriction enzymes, for example, recognize specific DNA sequences.
