Allostery

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000435

The regulation of a protein's activity or binding affinity at one site by the binding of an effector molecule at a different, distinct site. This mechanism involves conformational changes in the protein structure that are transmitted from the allosteric site to the active or orthosteric site. It is a fundamental regulatory principle in biochemistry.
