Active site

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000189

A specific region on the surface of a catalyst, enzyme, or adsorbent where the chemical reaction or binding event takes place. This site possesses a unique geometric and electronic structure that facilitates the interaction with reactant molecules. The efficiency and selectivity of a catalyst are largely determined by the nature and accessibility of its active sites.
