Active site
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003278
A specific region on the surface of a catalyst, such as an atmospheric aerosol particle or ice crystal, where reactant molecules attach and a chemical transformation is facilitated. The unique geometric and electronic structure of this location lowers the activation energy for a particular reaction. For instance, active sites on mineral dust particles can catalyze the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfate, influencing aerosol composition and cloud formation.
