Sulfuric acid

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009378

A strong mineral acid with the chemical formula H₂SO₄ that exists in the atmosphere as an aerosol. It forms from the atmospheric oxidation of sulfur dioxide, a pollutant from volcanic eruptions and fossil fuel combustion. Sulfuric acid is a primary component of acid rain and contributes to the formation of sulfate aerosols, which affect cloud properties and the Earth's radiation balance.
