Sulfates
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009374
Aerosol particles in the atmosphere composed of sulfur compounds, primarily ammonium sulfate and sulfuric acid. These particles are formed through the oxidation of sulfur dioxide, largely from anthropogenic sources like fossil fuel combustion and volcanic emissions. Sulfates scatter incoming solar radiation, contributing to atmospheric cooling, and also act as cloud condensation nuclei, influencing cloud formation and precipitation.
