Volcanic aerosol

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010049

Tiny solid or liquid particles suspended in the atmosphere that originate from volcanic eruptions. These aerosols, primarily sulfuric acid droplets formed from sulfur dioxide gas, can reflect incoming solar radiation, leading to a temporary cooling effect on Earth's climate. Large eruptions can inject these aerosols into the stratosphere, where they persist for years.
