Oxidation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007766

A chemical reaction involving the loss of electrons from an atom, molecule, or ion, which increases its oxidation state. In atmospheric chemistry, this process transforms many chemical species, such as the conversion of sulfur dioxide into sulfuric acid, a component of acid rain. This transformation is often initiated by hydroxyl radicals (OH), which act as a primary atmospheric oxidant, driving the breakdown of pollutants and greenhouse gases like methane.
