Oxidation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008390

A chemical process involving the loss of electrons by a molecule, atom, or ion, resulting in an increase in its oxidation state. This can occur through the removal of hydrogen atoms, the addition of oxygen atoms, or a direct electron transfer. In organic chemistry, the conversion of an alcohol to an aldehyde or ketone is an example of oxidation.
