Acetals

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000121

Organic compounds formed by the reaction of an aldehyde or ketone with two molecules of an alcohol, resulting in a carbon atom bonded to two alkoxy groups and one hydrogen atom (from an aldehyde) or two alkyl/aryl groups (from a ketone). They are stable in neutral or basic conditions but readily hydrolyze in acidic environments to regenerate the parent carbonyl compound and alcohol. Acetals serve as protecting groups for carbonyls in organic synthesis.
