Acylals
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000218
Compounds that are geminal diesters, with two acyloxy groups on one carbon, as in RCH(OCOR')2 and the aldehyde derivative benzylidene diacetate. They are formally the esters of an aldehyde hydrate. Acylals protect aldehydes in synthesis, since they are made from aldehydes and acid anhydrides, tolerate neutral and mildly acidic media better than acetals do, and are cleaved by aqueous base.
