Acyloins
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012839
A class of organic compounds that are alpha-hydroxy ketones, possessing a hydroxyl group on a carbon atom adjacent to a carbonyl group. These structures are systematically named as 2-hydroxyketones. Acyloins are notably formed through the reductive coupling of two carboxylic esters using metallic sodium, a process known as the acyloin condensation.
