Chemical induction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001949
A coupling between two reactions in which one reaction, the inducing reaction, speeds up another because an intermediate formed in the first, or one of its products, takes part in the second. It is often seen in redox and chain reactions, and it can drive a reaction that is thermodynamically unfavourable on its own, as when the oxidation of iron(II) by permanganate induces the oxidation of chloride to chlorine.
