Enzyme induction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004000

A rise in the rate at which cells make a particular enzyme, brought about by a substrate or another inducing molecule, so that the enzyme's level climbs and the cell can process the inducer or related compounds faster. In the liver, drugs such as rifampicin and phenobarbital induce cytochrome P450 enzymes and so speed the metabolism of other drugs. The lac operon of Escherichia coli, induced by allolactose, is the classic bacterial example.
