Operon
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008259
A functional unit of DNA containing a group of genes whose transcription is coordinated by a single regulatory signal or promoter. The genes within an operon are transcribed together into a single messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule and are often functionally related. The lac operon in E. coli, which controls lactose metabolism, is a classic example of this genetic regulatory system.
