Transcription factor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012200
A protein that controls the rate at which genetic information is transcribed from DNA into messenger RNA by binding to a specific DNA sequence. These proteins regulate gene expression by either promoting or blocking the recruitment of RNA polymerase, the enzyme that performs transcription. Transcription factors contain at least one DNA-binding domain that attaches to a specific sequence of DNA adjacent to the genes that they regulate.
