The biological process by which genetic information encoded in a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) template is copied into a complementary ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecule. This process is catalyzed by RNA polymerase and is the first step in gene expression. The resulting RNA molecule can be messenger RNA, transfer RNA, or ribosomal RNA.
