Ribosomal RNA
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010348
A type of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that forms a structural and catalytic component of ribosomes, the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis. It facilitates the binding of messenger RNA (mRNA) and transfer RNA (tRNA) during translation. In prokaryotes, ribosomal RNA molecules are typically 16S, 23S, and 5S in size, while eukaryotes have 18S, 28S, 5.8S, and 5S ribosomal RNA.
