Transfer RNA

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013664

A class of small ribonucleic acid molecules that function as adaptors in protein synthesis, translating the genetic code from messenger RNA (mRNA) into a sequence of amino acids. Each transfer RNA (tRNA) molecule has a specific anticodon loop that base-pairs with a corresponding codon on the mRNA strand. The other end of the tRNA carries the specific amino acid that the codon calls for, delivering it to the ribosome for addition to the growing polypeptide chain.
