Codon
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002167
A sequence of three adjacent nucleotides in a messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) molecule that specifies the incorporation of a particular amino acid into a polypeptide chain during protein synthesis. Each codon corresponds to one of the 20 standard amino acids or signals the termination of translation. There are 64 possible codons in the genetic code.
