Protein sequencer
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009585
An automated instrument that determines the primary structure of a protein, which is its amino acid sequence. The device performs sequential chemical reactions, most commonly Edman degradation, to cleave, separate, and identify one amino acid at a time from the N-terminus of the polypeptide chain. Modern sequencers can analyze picomole quantities of a protein and determine the sequence of 20 to 30 amino acids in a single run.
