Anticodon
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000671
A sequence of three nucleotides located on a molecule of transfer RNA (tRNA) that is complementary to a corresponding codon on a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule. During the process of protein synthesis, the anticodon base-pairs with the mRNA codon, an action that specifies which amino acid will be added to the growing polypeptide chain. For example, the anticodon sequence 3'-UAC-5' on a tRNA molecule pairs with the mRNA start codon 5'-AUG-3', which codes for methionine.
