Anticonvulsant

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000672

A drug used to prevent or reduce the severity and frequency of convulsive seizures, which are characteristic of certain neurological disorders like epilepsy. These agents typically work by modulating electrical activity in the brain, for instance, by blocking sodium or calcium channels, enhancing the inhibitory effects of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), or reducing the excitatory effects of glutamate. Phenobarbital and phenytoin are early examples of anticonvulsant medications.
