Glutamic acid decarboxylase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004928

An enzyme that catalyzes the decarboxylation of glutamic acid to form gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. This enzyme exists in two isoforms, GAD65 and GAD67, which are encoded by different genes. Autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase are a biomarker for Type 1 diabetes and some neurological disorders.
