Glutamate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004926
The anion of glutamic acid, an amino acid that functions as the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of mammals. It mediates fast synaptic transmission by binding to glutamate receptors on nerve cells, facilitating learning, memory, and neural communication. Excessive glutamate concentrations in the synaptic cleft can lead to excitotoxicity, a process that damages or kills nerve cells.
