Kainic acid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006296
A potent neuroexcitatory amino acid isolated from the red algae Digenea simplex, structurally related to glutamate. It acts as an agonist at specific glutamate receptors, particularly the kainate receptors, leading to neuronal overstimulation and excitotoxicity. This compound is often used in neuroscience research to induce epileptic seizures or neuronal damage.
