Domoic acid

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003379

A neurotoxic amino acid produced by certain marine diatoms, particularly those in the genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Consumption of shellfish contaminated with this toxin can lead to amnesic shellfish poisoning in humans and other animals. Domoic acid acts as an agonist for glutamate receptors in the brain, causing neuronal overstimulation and damage.
