Γ-aminobutyric acid

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004747

The main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the mammalian central nervous system, an amino acid that is made from glutamate by the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase. Binding to GABA-A receptors opens chloride channels, and binding to GABA-B receptors opens potassium channels through G proteins, so the neuron is hyperpolarized and fires less readily. Its formula is C4H9NO2, and it is not used to build proteins.
