Synaptic inhibition

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011741

The suppression of synaptic transmission, which occurs postsynaptically when an inhibitory transmitter such as GABA or glycine opens ion channels and makes the target neuron less likely to fire, or presynaptically when transmitter release from the terminal is reduced. Postsynaptic inhibition produces an inhibitory postsynaptic potential, usually through chloride influx or potassium efflux. GABA is the main inhibitory transmitter in the brain, and glycine is prominent in the spinal cord and brainstem.
