Inhibitory post-synaptic potential

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005852

A temporary hyperpolarization of the post-synaptic membrane caused by the flow of negatively charged ions into the post-synaptic neuron or positively charged ions out of it. This electrical event makes it more difficult for the neuron to fire an action potential. Neurotransmitters like GABA often mediate this effect.
