Synaptic cleft

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011740

The narrow extracellular space separating the presynaptic neuron from the postsynaptic neuron at a chemical synapse. Neurotransmitters are released into this gap from the presynaptic terminal and diffuse across it to bind to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane. Its width is typically about 20 to 40 nanometers.
