Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004326
A short-term rise in the response of a postsynaptic cell to successive impulses from a presynaptic neuron that fires in rapid succession. It arises mainly because calcium left in the presynaptic terminal after the first impulse raises the amount of transmitter released by the next. It fades within milliseconds to seconds, unlike long-term potentiation, which persists for hours or longer.
