Neurotransmitter
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007901
A chemical messenger that transmits signals across a chemical synapse from one neuron to another target cell. These substances are released from the presynaptic terminal, diffuse across the synaptic cleft, and bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic membrane. Examples include acetylcholine, dopamine, serotonin, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
